Hyman Hurwitz

Hyman Hurwitz

1770-1844

A Polish-born Biblical scholar, Hurwitz ran a Jewish boys’ boarding school in Highgate before being appointed the first Professor of the Hebrew Language at the newly established University College London in 1828. Hurwitz’s workplace at UCL would have been within walking distance of his home at 12 Amwell Street.

Moses Angel

Moses Angel

1818-1898

Angel was born in the City of London. After studying at University College he worked at a bank in Dublin before returning to London in 1840 to teach at the Jews' Free School in Spitalfields. Two years later he was made headmaster. He also became one of the first editors of the Jewish Chronicle. He lived at 1 Christopher Street (then King Street) in Finsbury.

Michael Friedländer

Michael Friedländer

1833-1910

Friedländer was born in Jutrosin, Poland, the son of a Talmudic scholar and grandson of a rabbi. After studying at university in Berlin he was invited to London in 1865 to become principal of the recently established Jews' College, located at the time at 10 Finsbury Square, in Moorfields, and Friedländer and his family had their living accommodation at the same address.
