Morris Kalikoff
1916-1944
Born in Kyiv, now in Ukraine, Kalikoff fled anti-Jewish violence there and settled in Islington. In 1939 he was living at 260A Upper Street. After enlisting in 1941 in the Sussex Regiment, he served in North Africa, Sicily into Italy, winning praise as a 'first-class soldier'. He was fatally wounded at the notoriously fierce Battle of Arnhem.
Wolf Morein
1908-1941
Morein was born and educated in Gateshead before moving to London to train for the ministry at Jews' College. In 1931 he was elected Minister at North London Synagogue, in Lofting Road, Barnsbury. He was living at 18 Aberdeen Park, Highbury, when the Second World War started and died during his service as war chaplain, where he had shown great drive and self-sacrifice.
Eric (Elihu) Estorick
1913-1993
Estorick was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Russian immigrants. Passionate about modern art, he was introduced to the Italian Futurist movement, which became the core of his collection, now housed in the Estorick gallery on Canonbury Road. In the 1960s he played an important role in helping to bring to London 1,564 Czech Torah scrolls rescued from the Nazis.
